Growing Up in
Wartime Somerset
In 2011, Syd published a book of his memories, ‘Growing up in Wartime Somerset’. The text, illustrated by his watercolours, vividly portrays an often harsh and toilsome way of life set against the romantic backdrop of the Somerset countryside, with it’s rolling hills and towering Elm trees.
About Syd Durston
Born in 1932, Syd Durston paints recollections of life in 1940s Somerset. He began painting in 1992, wanting to capture scenes from his memory of a long forgotten way of life. There are very few photographs of rural life from this time period, making Syd’s work a fascinating historical record, as well as and a touching tribute to the community in which he was raised.
